Lady Liberty, Lady Justice, and Lady Prudence
I was compelled to create works that were personal, yet could represent a shared or public experience that would be political in nature as well as intimate in its creation and meaning.
The recent and current cultural and political climates have affected me in ways in which I struggle to find the words necessary to fully express the overwhelming impact I experience. I needed to create work that walked the fine line between my personal experience and a shared public experience that I witness all around me.
These works are from me but not solely for me. I present to you a version of:
Lady Liberty,
Lady Justice, and
Lady Prudence.
These images were formed after considering the original symbolic representations that are meant to portray three virtues which are deemed by American culture as fundamental virtues necessary for the continuation of the American culture.
These symbolic images were appropriated from other cultures and adopted to further the interests of American ideals. They are all portrayed as women, yet how does the American culture treat and portray women?
In my creations of these symbolic ladies, I wanted to portray the very statues coming to life in outrage, shock, and alarm. They are created on bed sheets and are meant to hang from the ceiling existing in the space of the viewer. The area surrounding them is exploding with shredded paper.
